The exhibit is open at Kitchener City Hall in the Berlin Tower from March 2nd to March 30th. The theme is "New to Me" which means that all the artists submitted art in a genre or with subject matter in which they do not usually work. I submitted my "Bird of Paradise" batik. I have always been intrigued with the process of batik which involves painting on rice paper using layers of colour and wax applied alternately from light to dark. At the end, you crumple up the paper so the wax cracks, and then apply your darkest colour. Then you iron your painting to remove all the wax between sheets of newsprint. This leaves all the colour behind along with uneven cracks, dribbles, blots and interesting texture. I really liked the process and the finished painting. I think I will work on a series of batik paintings this summer - and I already have people asking to learn how to do it! Watch for a Saturday workshop later this spring!
